I think you need to tell us what you currently have for anyone to make suggestions...

I'm waiting to pick up my Palladio door. Supposedly safer than a lot of composite doors:

Look for PAS24 certified doors, they are built to a security standard.

I've seen the test on a door for the certification, quite impressive.

Comes to us all, I'm afraid.

something with a good multi-point locking system, a top rated lock / key system, proper fitting by a firm which knows what they are doing, and any glazing in or near the door (and ideally the whole ground floor when you get round to it) being of a heavy laminated security glass, would be my recommendations.

And obviously take the same approach for any other entrace doors because there's no point in having a strong front door and a flimsy crap patio door round the back.

I know someone who has just done the same. You really need a good quality, established, company who can explain strengths, sizes, options etc. It's not as clear cut as you may first assume. There's many rogues out there.

I used to live in a house with a Garofoli security door. You'd have had more luck smashing through the walls than getting through that.

Is there much point in having an impregnable front door? Surely most burglars would just break a window and climb in through that?
How many criminals break down a front door?

Or am i looking at this the wrong way, and the OP is worried that the police will be knocking early one morning with a battering ram and wants as much time as possible to leg it out the back?

This. Burglars will break in via the least secure point of any given house, which is usually a window round the back, and not overlooked. That's where you need to concentrate your security efforts. Ask me how I know...

Decent security should see them go elsewhere, however. If they're trying to be quiet (i.e. at night) a door is the usual method of entry.

In the daytime I could slap on a hi-viz and cut your high security door out of your wall in a few minutes and in most places nobody would look twice.

Laminated glass isn't particularly expensive. Would certainly recommend on French doors as a minimum (due to being toughened glass).

Dog.

Camera’s make little difference if someone wants to break in. My insurance company offers no difference in premium for CCTV. Yes, you might get an alert saying someone is outside the house but the reality is the police won’t attend quick enough to catch them. We pay for a key holder service, they can get to the house fairly quickly with a big German Shepherd.

Mate of mine was burgled (sledge hammer or something similar through patio doors)…they went in every room their fairly large dog couldn’t get in to. Police said they go to windows and make a noise and see which one the dog can’t get to.

Gun’s are good because if you’re a registered gun holder I think they’ll send armed police smile Maybe they arrive quicker…..

We have a Spitfire S-200 door and glazed side panels, fitted DIY. I designed the side panels so they have a central vertical bar up the middle, splitting the glass into two so a thief would need to be about six inches wide to get through by breaking the glass. They’re aluminium doors custom made (in Greece IIRC) with multipoint locks etc - ultimately the Euro cylinder is the weak point - no getting round that unfortunately other than fitting a top quality cylinder. I can’t see an easy way through ours, apart from via the cylinder.
