Turret room ideas
Discussion
I've bought a property which is a bit of a project, which is another topic entirely.
It's a 3 bed detached house on a corner plot, with the corner having a turret built onto it. This turret is in both the living room and master bedroom.
I quite like it, it's about 7 foot wide. In the living room it's currently set up with some cushions and is a bit of a reading nook but in the bedroom we just dumped all our s
t in there. I'm planning on re-doing the bedroom soon but this turret is something I'm a bit lost with.
What ideas do you have for such a space? Right now I feel it's completely wasted as it really is just full of boxes. I'd like to do something better with it and those boxes can be removed.
I was thinking a couple of nice chairs and a table or something but I don't see us using this.
Neither of us really read much, and we have the downstairs turret for this.
I obviously don't want to turn it into a dressing area where all of the town can see us.
Thanks

Well, that was my initial idea. I guess the problem is that you're visible by your neighbours unless you put in some kind of curtain. I suppose you could put a telescope in there. Just remember to dust it every now and then.

Turrets are a bit of a design feature in our street. There are 16 houses, all have turrets at the front and some have another at the rear. As far as I can see by being nosey, everyone has a couple of chairs in them. Looks lovely from outside but does make for a fairly compromised space inside.
I did think about a telescope but I don't want the young lady across the street getting the wrong ideas.
Chairs seem the obvious thing, I was hoping something more exciting would be suggested.
The turret is the reason I bought the house, it looks dope. However now I have it I have no idea what to do with it. If we lived in the hills and could sit here looking over the local deer out for a stroll or watch the local ducks fly in for the night it would be great but this one is in the middle of a semi-busy suburban street.
I would just look like a tit sat up there staring at my neighbours.

This is no use to you, but I've got a turret too. In my case, a wide marble spiral staircase runs up it and serves the basement and upper floor.
As you say, turrets have strong visual impact but are compromised in most practical senses.
Very nice. I don't have a basement but I have been watching Colin Furze build his tunnel system so I know what to do.As you say, turrets have strong visual impact but are compromised in most practical senses.
These have been quite common features in NW London. Not entirely sure why they were added unless it was down to an influx of cheap Scottish architects back in the 1930s?
Great spaces once you work out how you wish to use them.
Most of the time they have a nice chair, table and a large tropical plant and the space is used for coffee and iPad consumption during the day then boozing in the evening.
The one opposite us had shutters fitted to segregate it from the main room and I'm guessing you'd certainly want something like that.

Not a turret, but we have a big floor to ceiling window on the third floor at the end of our lounge, it's a great place to sit in the sun and watch the wheelclampers and the ensuing chaos when tourists get back to thier cars having exceed the 1 hour parking limit
