Hi all
I'm looking to replace the windows in my house and I'm going to have ago myself on some smaller downstairs windows before unleashing my self on the rest.
There looks to be several places online who will supply frames and glass to size etc, does anyone have any experience of who to avoid etc?
Cheers

There are in essence two suppliers.
- The extruder, who designs and makes the profiles, and sells the extruded lengths and other fittings.
- The window co, who takes the extrusions and welded them together into frames, and typically supplies glass and or an installer.
Rehau are a long standing extruder who get good press. But its not something I have looked into in depth myself as I have yet to had to replace any windows, and prefer wooden frames.
Depending on what you have currently, have you considered refurbishing the old ones?

That approach is ok, so long as you do not intend to resell at any point, if you do then you'll need to engage building control at the council.I'm looking to replace the windows in my house and I'm going to have ago myself on some smaller downstairs windows before unleashing my self on the rest.

Alternatively employ a Fensa registered window installer to save a load of bother.
Theres lots of competition so it wont be that much more than buying them on a DIY basis.
As above, I'm all for having a go and have swapped out the odd blown unit but not sure it would be worth the effort to do a whole house frames and all. I'd get a couple of quotes from some local independents as may be better than you think.
Also bear in mind that it may throw up an issue if you want to sell at some point as believe windows are supposed to be installed by FENSA registered installers only??

The profile is important ish but its down to the fabricator really, I’ve had some awful Rehau frames in the past, all down to whoever made them. You can DIY but they will need signed off by LABC. Make sure you fit toughened glass if needed, fit lintels if not present, and make sure you don’t make any means of escape worse, always make it better if possible. LABC will usually visit before you start to check current means of escape, many people want to fit what they thinks looks best, not was is legal.
