I am planning to build a side-extension for my elderly mother's home - basically a downstairs shower room and utility room (currently use the garage for this). There is already a conventional boiler system in the house but I would prefer not to mess around with this until the side extension is done (disruption aside - it's only a few years old). Would it be totally crazy to install a second boiler (system or electric) in the extension and integrate them at a later date?

I wasn’t able to run two off a single supply so that might limit you to electric?

It’s pretty easy to tap into the flow and returns anyway, I fitted full-bore lever valves to make it easy to isolate the new pipe work when working on the new additions - saves draining down the whole lot.

Seems mad for a small extension.

Why not install an electric shower and electric heating if its temporary?

For the utility area if you need hot water you can get small electric water heaters for sinks.

You'll be limited for choice.

We bought this house it had an extension on the end, with an en-suite., due the distance an upheaval a separate water heater was fitted for the hot water requirements, later found out a pumped secondary return could , have been used, too late now though.

22 years later this heater gave up and parts no longer available, my Heating engineer has fitted a new one, only two to choose from, this is made by Ariston and came to £1100 all in. he did say to have a pumped return put in now would have cost 70% as much and as above a lot of mess and upheaval.

I don’t think there is space for a megaflow (to replace the vented tank in the bathroom). If not then it might be easier to air source heat pump to the extension OR small system boiler - and eventually join it to the rest of the house? I will check
if I can add a second boiler or put a megaflow in the loft (where the cold water tank is).

This.

By all means use a electric space heater a bit during the build, but as soon are your ready to have rads, just hook it up to the existing system.

Almost certainly, same again for the shower. Unless these is a specific driver as to why an electric shower might be preferable.

Back on track. I just realised the existing toilet next to proposed extension can be converted to a boiler room with megaflow tank. All the work can be done outside until we need to hook up the rest of the house to new boiler. Minimum downtime as I assume the switchover can be done in a day. We can pressure test the existing hot water system separately.
