I believe it is grey asbestos and the local tip accepts it as long as double bagged, am I legally required to get professionals in to deal with it?

Suit up, mask up take care and you will be ok. Try not to go gung ho and smash it up as that is when the fibres are released and spread.

Suit, mask and gloves. Can it be taken apart to save breaking it? If you have to break it then maybe wrap in plastic first?
Just be sensible and you will be fine.

HSE have a suite of free 'task sheets' online covering specific removal tasks for various non licenced asbestos materials telling you exactly how to go about it.
