Just a heads up in case anyone has used any of these...

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/675...

It appears that the Essentials range was made in China, and doesn't meet the requirements.
As I understand it, it is only the Essentials range and not the other ranges like Logic Plus.

EDIT: The advice was updated in January... The risk has been changed from, “high risk of fire” to “risk of minor burns.”
As I understand it, this is now a removal from sale and no longer a recall.

We had some spured switches for our ridge and freezer and when we needed to isolate the freezer, it had seized. Tried the others and the same.

Sparks came and changed them all and the sockets as he said they are no longer the quality they used to be since they weee bought out.

A year or two after that, a friend had one of their fuse boxes and it caught fire!

It wasn’t long after they did a recall on the box for exactly this problem.

Thanks for the info OP.

I have always specifically bought MK products believing (wrongly it seems) them to be high quality compared to some of the other makes available.

This happens so often. A British-made product gains a reputation for quality over decades, so people trust it, then production is moved to China... it lives on the brand for a while the people realise it's become cheap junk and buy another make instead.

Yep, real shame that MK stuck their name on these.

Another good British brand that's completely devalued itself.

Yes, this is the key.
As far as I understand it, there is no suggestion that 'proper' MK stuff has a problem. It appears that they bought in a new range (and obviously failed to test it - which is bad in itself).
I think the 'Essentials' range was sold via places like Screwfix, so will be widely installed. Some people just go for lowest price.

As it happens, I tend to use the MK Logic Plus if going for 'standard' white outlets - never had an issue with those.

No dog in the fight - I just thought passing on the warning might be useful to people on here.

Yeah same, MK Logic throughout my house and very happy with them... the switches in particular feel so much better than the cheaper stuff out there.

I wonder how effective the recall will be?

Homeowners who've had these fitted by trades are very unlikely to know there's a recall themselves, and how many electricians/kitchen fitters, etc., are going to see the notice and volunteer do anything about it for the customers they fitted them for?

There isn’t a recall - they have been withdrawn from the market. No mention of any recall.

Decent electricians go for decent kit, I've found.

After all, they don't want to be coming back to fix things.

Depressing, I always used to spec MK Logic on projects in an effort to establish a quality benchmark for contractor designed installations.

Around a year ago I bought an MK switch for a small job at home and found that the terminal screws simply would not drive home however much force was applied without chewing the heads. For something so fundamental I was genuinely shocked (no pun intended) that they could be sold.

Can anyone suggest a good quality manufacturer to spec now?

Crabtree?

I fitted their stuff throughout the house when rewired about 5 years ago.

Seem very well made with good positive switch action etc.
IIRC their pull cord shower isolator is a sparkies favourite. It's certainly very well designed and the least likely to suffer loose connections.

A quick Google shows me Crabtree are now owned by a company called Electrium, who do not, according to their website, have any factories in China.

Thanks for that - a brand I had forgotten about, along with Ashley.

My brother did his own house and used Crabtree, and my Dads house.

I’ve used Crabtree too and happy… but also used BG as their dimmers were half the price of Crabtree (but the DGs feel a bit flimsier and I wouldn’t buy again as one of the knobs broke)

Wrt these MK essentially, I assume if they fire out a spark that can burn you, they’re a fire ignition risk?
