Protecting new carpet from office/swivel chairs

Just had upstairs decorated with some new pretty deep pile carpet installed.

Already lots of fluff generated with chair wheels, don't like how deep the wheels sink and the marks already being made.

Got one of these plastic carpet protectors from Amazon and it last about 2 days before it started cracking under the weight of the chair and me.

What solutions do other people use? Was thinking maybe some plyboard cut and painted and placed under the desk? Or maybe thicker vinyl flooring cut? Pack of hardwood/laminate, click and glue together were the chair will be?

Any other suggestions?

I suppose it depends on how much you weigh, but I have been using a large clear plastic deskchair matt from Viking for over 2 decades and its very strong, breaking it would take some serious effort. Maybe the problem is the product you bought rather than the solution?

If you're wheeling heavy weights around on tiny wheels, what on earth did you install deep pile carpets for? Or if you have an upstairs office, why not carpet that in 'normal' carpet and keep the deep pile stuff for where you won't be wheeling a chair around. I know, hindsight and all that.

don't throw the plastic mat out just yet... What I am doing is getting some floating/timber laminate floor planks, glue 'em together with PVA and then glue all that onto the plastic mat. Get enough of the floating floor that it is wider in all directions than the plastic mat. The plastic carpet protectors vary a lot in quality. I work from home on a proper office chair (and I'm not as light as I was once) rolling between a couple of screens daily. I usually get about 2-3 years out of a mat before it starts to crack up.

As an example I've been using a "Marvelux 75 x 120cm Durable" via Amazon since Sept 22 and it's still fine.

Laminate floor on top of your extra deep pile carpet and then a thin office style carpet on top of this with a carpet protector on top.

Just get a large thin-pile remnant edged by your carpet fitter or shop.

I got fed up and ditched the plastic floor protectors for a tempered glass one a few years ago and its miles better. It looks better, doesn't move and is perfectly smooth. I did swap the casters on my chair for some poncy ones at the same time but not sure that was necessary.

Only disadvantage I can consider is that if you drop a heavy ceramic or metallic item you might end up with a million small pieces of glass to deal with.

Get a good carpet protector and consider changing the wheels on the chair. Mine are to protect my LVT floor and they are much better.

They are bigger, like roller blade wheels.

Yes, I was going to suggest the same. Having noticed that the stock plastic wheels on my Ikea office chair were not always turning well and sometimes dragging along the carpet as a result, I swapped them out for some rollerblade-type ones from Amazon and they've been brilliant. I've worked pretty much full time from home for over four years now and the carpet underneath is absolutely fine.

Its not like you can roll around on carpet anyway, so having feet instead isnt much of a chore and is much friendlier to the carpet.

I have laminate flooring in a room above a fellow tenant.

Would one of these lessen the noise of the rolling casters slightly?
