I haven't fact checked this, but caught a video clip of a guy (in the USA) highlighting what the minimum requirement for the tread on a flight of stairs is. I'm sure he said 11 inches. I have size ten shoe feet and I cannot place my foot entirely on a step (only on the landing). There is a bit of an overhang. Going up doesn't matter so much but it's more noticeable coming down.

Thinking about all the houses I've lived in, this has always been the case (in adult life, obvs). The house I'm in currently is the largest of them all, but the going, or tread could be longer come to think of it. I find myself (subconsciously) placing ,my feet at an angle coming down the stairs.

Do the larger steps only exist in big houses in the UK?

The stairs on my house go through two turns (therefore have two landings) due to the layout of the hallway. Two steps to the first landing, nine to the next and another four to the first floor. Plus or minus a bit, allowing for carpet, the 'going' on my steps is 8".

How big is yours?

Presuming UK, the going (in a new domestic construction) has to be between 220mm (225mm in Scotland)and 300mm ( not counting any nosing/ overhang.
The height of the rise also has to be taken into account as the stairs can't be steeper than 42°.
Different sizes for public spaces.
