Thankfully, if I had been at work all day it could have been a lot worse! censored

All connections are dry so looking like there is a split in the tank somewhere, have drained it down but impossible to be 100% until it is removed so just going ahead and having a new tank installed (tomorrow)

If it's a copper HW cylinder, they can fail at the bottom seam. Happened to me too!

It's the cold water storage tank in the loft, picking a replacement up from Screwfix tomorrow, everywhere else was earliest next Tuesday!

Indeed hehe

All sorted and business as usual, will leave the ceiling repair for a few months to give the plasterboard time to dry out properly,

If it had not been for Screwfix I would be waiting untill Tuesday/Wednesday for a replacement tank to arrive and then be fitted so thumbup

What's it made of? Mine's plastic. I hope I never need to replace it because it about 10x bigger than the loft hatch!

Yes plastic, at a guess i would say it was at least 30 years old. Of course with the tank empty it was even more impossible to find the leak

Luckily mine came out the loft hatch without the need to cut it up smile

The skirting in the hallway blowing off the wall was the first I knew of our downstairs toilet leaking. Guessing it had been leaking for a few days to a week.

The original plumber had cross threaded the feed into the cistern 20 years ago. Amazed it lasted as long as it did.

For future reference talcum powder can help to find leaks. Dust it on and running drips will leave a visible trail.
