I've just installed a generic LED PIR bulkhead light, and it's clearly in a walk-test mode- zero delay, ignores ambient light level.

There doesn't seem to be a switch to disable this mode - do modern PIRs go into walktest automatically when first installed, or some similar clever thing? Manual is totally helpless on this.

When you say 'just installed' do you mean as in today? If so, might you need to wait for a day/night/day cycle to complete for it to reset itself (and determine what 'night' really looks like)?

Is there any switch or button on it? I bought some solar powered led lights to put on the outside of my shed, from Amazon. The switch cycles through the modes from off, dim, dim then bright when triggered to bright when triggered but off otherwise. You just press the button until you get what you want.

Yes, today.

It's odd. I've adjusted the delay and light sensitivity pots off the endstops, and when powered up the light comes on for 30 seconds as expected. In daylight, the light wasn't coming on at all when I walked near it. In the dark, the light's coming on, but literally for a second unless I keep dancing underneath it.

It's one of these. https://integral-led.com/en/product/bulkhead-ceili...
