Our outside lights have been staying on more and more recently, pretty much all night yesterday. Occasionally they flick off and come triaight back on.

They seem to be hooked into one of the downstairs lighting circuits, we haven’t a switch to turn them off. Just a push button on and an on switch. Below.

PIR

Inside connecting to PIR

If I disconnect the PIR at the junction box, will I just be able to just switch manually?

Likely bypass it, rather than just disconnect?

I've had several outside lights with varying levels of "automation' over the years - motion sensors, dusk to dawn, both at the same time - and they all fail after a few years.

Rather than buying yet another fitting, I took the old one off the wall and ripped out the electronics, turning it into a "dumb" fitting.
I put in an LED smart lamp (Tapo), and have set a schedule in Alexa to control it.
It now comes on a few minutes before sunset, and goes off at bedtime.

Probably.

Equally replacing the failing PIR like for like should be a fair easy job. Although I would splash out on a £20 one from someone like TLC Electrical rather than a £6 LAP screwfix jobba because in my experience these perform badly.

I don't know if anyone can give any specific brand/sensor recommendations?

Thank you, yes a new sensor is the way to go. I was just trying to find a shortcut until I can pick a unit up.

Good point about avoiding a cheapo.

Steinal PIR sensors. They are the tits. I have 4 of them, very rarely falsely triggered but actually activate when you want them to. they are far from cheap but the Steinel IS1 can be found for about 25 quid.
