Hi all - I need to replace my concealed toilet cistern, but the cut out for the push button is quite large (65mm diameter) and all the ones I can see to replace it with are around 38mm.

Do they all work the same way? i.e. could I retain the buttons from my existing one, and just put the pipe connecting it from the new one up to it? Or doesn't it work like that? Seems to create a push of air or something when I push the button.

Thanks all.

My parents had a similar issue, they got a plumber out who said they needed a new cistern. What the plumber done was to leave the old button in place & made a new whole for the new button. It now has 2 buttons but only the new one is connected, not ideal but saves having a hole.

i had a similar issue, I ended up soaking the whole button assembly in white vinegar for 24 hours and it started working again fine

yep they all work the same way, if you feel the need you can test it by replacing it with a syringe, I tested one for about 2 months before I got round to finding a proper replacement.

Screwfix do larger diameter pneumatic cistern buttons as do a number of other manufacturers

I’m afraid they don’t all work the same way.

Turns out some (like mine) are air powered (pneumatic) and some are cable driven (like the one I just bought from B&Q).

At least now I know I can do some more specific searches.
