We have a 20yo AEG gas hob that works fine except the insulation has broken off a couple of the igniters so the spark doesn't light the gas so we use a flame to light them. I figured it would be an easy job to order replacements but AEG just told me the hob is eol (no surprise there) and to buy a new hob!

We can't just buy a replacement hob as the hood is only 60cm above it so I guess safety specs have changed since it was installed as all the hobs I've checked need a 65cm height.

Does anyone know if I can order some generic igniters or does anyone have a solution?

TIA

Really not worth faffing with mate.
Just use a gas lighter - you probably already are.

The clearance you speak of has been 650mm for over 20 years, I guess your hob simply wasn't fitted to standards. Not uncommon back then. Still happens now!

Gas lighters are old hat these days, electric is where it's at...

Plasma arc! Like a mini taser and it's rechargeable so no need to mess about with gas, we have one and it's great.

Google
poundstretcher gas igniter
The first listed item could be what you were looking for.
I purchased one at the exorbitant cost of £0.69 about a month ago, and use it almost daily.

'Plasma arc'... would that be what was formerly called a 'spark' but with extra marketing?

Nope it's literally an arc, like a mini taser.

Ok, was hoping replacing the igniters would be a simple job but will carry on using an external lighter until we decide if a new kitchen is doable!

Are these things really specific to the manufacturer? I bought a couple for our Rangemaster (15 years old itself) a year or two ago and it took maybe two minutes to complete the job. It's just a lead, a little metal plate about the size of a fingernail to attach it to the burner, and then the sparker bit attached to that plate which is rather like the tip of the core of a spark plug. Unscrew the plate, pull gently and the lead comes up from within ending in a spade connector.

Maybe take out the faulty one and have a good look at it. I doubt these things are really specific to a certain manufacturer or model of hob, there's probably a handful of standard sizes.

Yeah they will most likely be fairly generic - if you can get the AEG part number I bed you'll find them fairly easily!

I've found https://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/ to be very helpful before now in tracking down parts for a different hob, which I'd also been told was obsolete.

Looking at the listings, lots of AEG parts are common across Electrolux, Zanussi and IKEA models too.

Have you taken one of the old ones out to see if you can find a similar item on their website?
