Last night randomly my inner pain window of the skylight broken and came crashing down. Dunno how.
I didn't have time to check insurance at 1am but should I claim kn my home insurance for this? Obviously it depends on the excess cost but what's the likely cost if I don't go through insurance. Roughly.

Where the glass landed had also chipped a floor tile about half a 5p piece sized chip.
Thoughts? Or hassle for future quotes?

Is it Velux? Maybe ten year ago same happened to mine.
I contacted Velux more in respect of the safety concern - I’d no idea how old the window was. They sent someone out and replaced the glass - no quibbles whatsoever.
(As for your floor I can’t help.)

I dont know how much a repair would be, but when I claimed £800 off for dislodged ridge tiles to be replaced/reset it made no difference at renewal.

Do you have any spare tiles for the floor?

This happened to one of our velux windows a few years ago. It was well out of warranty but when I called Velux they said that they knew of a large number of bad batches of glass, and as my window had the same batch number they replaced the glass in all of our velux windows (8) for free. Its definitely worth a call.

Velux did have at one time some problems, there was a recall number in most of the daily papers, it was only for one particular size I think.

I just sent the ID numbers to Velux, got a reply almost immediately, then a call from a company they were using stating when they were in our area.

Two men arrived and replaced glass in two windows, less than an hour and done.

What’s more concerning is it is float glass and not toughened.

Fitted hundreds of roof lights over the years, Velux and other makes when on a roof and never thought it wouldn’t be toughened glass in them.

Not good at all if someone was under it.

Same happened to me - Velux swapped out way beyond what was a reasonable expectation of warranty.
Apparently there was a pin hole which created a vacuum which led to the glass shower all over the bathroom

Same, always thought they were either toughened or laminate.

Valid thoughts.

Maybe its changed, but it appears you are right.

"All our glazing units come with a laminated inner pane. What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass? Our rooflights are produced with toughened glass on the outside and laminated glass on the inside. Toughened glass is stronger than the laminated glass of the same size and thickness."

Got a result. Velux got back in touch with me. They are going to replace it free of charge. Will take a few weeks. Thanks whoever above mentioned the product issue I'd never have thought or known about it.

Whereas we claimed (first and only claim in 28 years) for a cracked ceramic hob - £400 with a £150 excess. Bad move. We had difficulty even getting cover the year after. It’d have to something major like a gas explosion or flood before I’d ever claim again.

Which number did you get?

I have 3 of these which look identical to yours and will be about 15 years old.

I have the window serial number on the grey strip across the topside of the frame, but looking at the recall page they seem to want a number off the inside of the spacer bar inside the glazing unit.... my windows are not very accessible...

I had contemplated replacing them anyway whilst I have a scaffold up.... as I have installed very high performance glazing everywhere else and considered changing them to match

Couldn't risk moving it to see the number as the person on the phone said I'd need to get to it. They estimated what size it is and told me what to put on the form.
