Water Pipes Clanging
Discussion
I've an old house where the water supply (1" steel pipes) supply a row of houses including mine, as opposed to the modern way of doing it where each house would have it's own supply from the kerbside supply. So our water supply comes from the kerb then goes to a couple of houses, then to mine, then onwards to a few more.
It's all been fine for decades but in the last year at random times (never in the night afaik) the pipes make a random clanging noise lasting for a few seconds to a minute or so. It doesn't sound like pipes expanding/contracting through clips as there is a definite reverberation.
I've not changed anything in years.
I wonder if it could be related to neighbours turning their water on/off and me getting some water hammer or some such as a result. My water pressure is 76-78psi which seems on the high side?
I am wondering if I should fit a pressure reducer/hammer reducer at the inlet to the house and if that would help? Or could it be something else altogether?
Many thanks for any suggestions.

I had this with an outside tap that I added when extending the house.
Doubled up the pipe supports on the 8m 15mm pipe run.
Made no difference.
Spoke to a plumber at work. He suggested it was caused by the washer valve in the outside tap being loose and rattling.
Changed the tap.
Sorted.
