I've left my BGE for a few months after it's last use (it was one of those parties where you forget...)

It's pretty grim.

The grills are going to need a pretty thorough clean/soak/scrub. Is there any wonder chemical I can use?

One of those oven cleaning kits from the supermarket with a bag and a bottle of gloop should do. If the grills are furry, maybe a quick burn to get the urgh off first.

Be very careful with chemicals - certainly don't use them anywhere near the egg - it will taint it.

I'd just fill it full of charcoal, light it, let it get up to temp with the vent about 50%, and then open them fully and let it burn all the crap away.

If you get it hot enough it will clean the inside of soot as well as burning away all the crap inside.

Have a look at this

Thanks, I'll have a go at killing, I mean cleaning it with fire and I've bought a couple of those bags for the actual grill part. I've been promising my wife I'll tackle it daily for a while now and it's getting to the point I'm actually going to have to do it.

Same - get it up to temp for a while and it should cook off 99% of the bits.
