Hello all,

Can anyone recommend a garden vac that works - mainly for leaves/ box hedge clippings etc?

Thanks.

All the little electric ones generally are pretty rubbish, even the plug-in ones, in my experience. Unless it’s only a v small amount. If you have a lot then I’d get a Billy Goat wheeled vacuum but appreciate that might not be what you need and they are £££.

Thanks for the reply. It's only a small garden so was hoping for a cable / plug in vac.

Thanks

They are generally rubbish, you will find these easier, lighter to use and more effect.

I have a

Black and Decker 36v Cordless Blower Vac

I only ever use it in vacuum mode.

I wanted cordless as I would never bother using one if I had to drag a cable around

Unfortunately, the battery time is measured in seconds so the best strategy us to rake up most and then vac anything too small to rake.

This seems to have pretty good reviews for the price.

When I had a small garden, I’d just rake up and bag the bigger trimmings, then use the mower to mulch the smaller cuttings.

For leaves I’d just use the mower on a high setting to either mulch them or collect them, but needs to be done before they start to go soggy.

It’ll be done before you’ve unblocked the vacuum for the fifteenth time wink

Absolutely. No need to buy a huge great gadget made of plastic, lithium and electricity that you have to store, plug in or recharge.

If you do get one, make sure it blows as well as sucks.

My neighbour bought a cheap mains leafblower with vac function.

First time he truned it to 'vac' he disappeared an a cloud of dust!

I have a old flymo one my mother gave me she bought early 90s. It's falling apart but still blows. I also bought a cheap argos one last year died 1st use as a vac.

Honestly I use mower and just mulch more effective

We were given an old mains powered Bosch one by my FIL. I think we’d used it once before today to pick up leaves from the driveway. I used it to collect the last of the leaves from today’s hedge trimming, though most of it was raked and picked up by hand - the vac could only manage leaves and nothing with more than a very small stalk.

It can be switched to blow mode (after some faffing) and was either ineffective on the lowest setting or way too powerful on the other setting…!

I’d class in the category of occasionally useful (we’ve used it twice in three years) but still bettered by a rake (which is also benefits from being silent and therapeutic).

Buy the rake.
