What's that thing called? A piece of wood - in this case - half buried in the ground to separate the two areas.

Q2 - where can I find tips on DIY replacement of the rotten one I've currently got?

TIA!

Replace it with a concrete one, or just don't bother like almost everyone, everywhere else in the universe does?

I've used plastic barge boards/soffits (brown) and the new roofing panels set down in the past ... flexible if you want a curve smile
But I hate gravel/pebbles because they go on the lawn and bugger up the blades on your mower. smile

No way! Gravel paths without some form of edging are completely st, especially when there's a lawn alongside.

A good alternative is everedge, I’ve got it fitted on all my borders.
