So i am planning on renovating my utility room and want to stick an appliance where i currently have a cupboard. problem is mains stop cock is in the way (i think) and reduces my max depth of appliance.

Can i loosen the stop cock and valve, rotate them upwards so free up more room or is that a hassle not worth it?

and yes i like M&Ms smile

You can.
There is almost certainly a 'water board' stop cock out in the road some where, you could move the internal one as much as you want.

Personally, I'dprefer it to be more accessible than buried behind the washing machine or whatever.
Although, if you know where the company one is, in the drive next to the meter in my case, you hardly need the indoor one.

I would take the opportunity to fit one of these remote stop cocks, both get more clearance and give yourself easy access to the stopcock in one go...

You definitely want your stop cock not only accessible quickly (I e. not hidden behind an appliance), but you should test it intermittently to ensure it hasn't seized. I'd also make a point of knowing in advance where the main standpipe or shutoff outside is and ensure you have an appropriate tool to turn it off, should you ever need it.

Nothing Ike mincing about in the dark and rain looking for a standpipe that you likely don't have a tool for because you have a leak... They never happen on sunny afternoons with nothing going on, I can assure you. laugh

I'd replace it with a lever ball valve. Those tap-style one invariably seize up solid just when you need to use them.

Thanks all. Mains shut off is about 100m away on another road - not necessarily easy smile

i shall get a plumber out to do the necessary.

I not know how large you land is, but if the shut off is difficult to get to and you have waterlines lines running for extended distances on your land you might also want to consider putting in place an accessible stop cock of some sort.

Another vote for them....ours was under a run of units, & now we can easily actually stop the water!
