The timer on my boiler has stopped working on the central heating circuit. It has an intermittent fault which meant that sometimes it turns the heating on sometimes it doesn't! The hot water works fine and when the heating does decide to turn on, the radiators get hot quickly and work perfectly via the 'dumb' thermostat.

The boiler is no longer supported so I can't get a spare timer and I am planning on moving house next year so don't really want to install a new boiler. So, would installing a smart thermostat be an option? Does it replace all the timers etc. on the boiler and have this in the device?

On the Hive website, its says that if they can't install, there is no charge but how true is that?

Thanks in advance!

Have you proved that it is the timer at fault and not a faulty/sticky motorised valve in the system?

Sort of. I had an emergency heating tech come out in the spring (home insurance emergency cover) who said it was the timer fault and linked it out. Ideal then came to do a service in May/June time, said your timer is linked out. I sad, i know and explained why. They removed the link and said that the timer was fine.... That's the problem with intermittent faults. They are never here when someone is trying to diagnose a problem. the heating worked fine last week (first time it's been needed since May) but is refusing to come on today.

I’ve found a replacement timer module on eBay. I’ll see what happens when I swap that over.

It’s working again at random!!

Well the replacement timer isn't working so as predicted above, its probably the diverter valve. I've called a local central hearting co. to come and look at it. How much of a job is this likely to be?
