This guy had some good reviews on checkatrade, quoted the amount you'd expect for plastering (i.e. expensive!), took 3 days to skim 1 small room and then yesterday produced this masterpiece when skimming an artex ceiling:

I think we need him to scrape it off before it fully dries, and then to leave and never come back.

What do people think?

I’m speechless that someone would think it’s ok to do a job as bad as that .
See if you can get him back and strip it off then get someone decent in , preferably overboard it then skim .

He ain't a plasterer, he's a scammer.

His proposal to "fix" it was to wait for it to dry, then sand it back and touch it up. My worry is that clearly it hasn't adhered to the ceiling so it's just going to fall off at some point. That and the fact that that's a ridiculous suggestion!

Jesus Christ. Not the work of a plasterer. Nor even a bodger. That’s someone having a go for the first time. Looks like he didn’t even spin off the pendant bracket. Did he use blue grit on the ceiling? If not, it’ll probably all fall off as it dries. I doubt you’re getting him back to scrape it off either. If you scrape it yourself, beware that Artex can contain asbestos.

I had a pro plasterer do a flat recently, he did 4 rooms and 2 ceilings in 3 days.

Giving work to trades is such a lottery at the moment.

That would be the kind of pace I was expecting. I think this guy probably had his family/friends write some reviews and is trying his luck.

He was super stressed and knew that this had gone badly wrong, but why would you take on a big tricky job like an artex ceiling if you're just starting out?

All of the above.
I wouldn't consider any further work other than removing anything he can.
I hope you haven't paid him.

This does make Checkatrade pretty pointless.

That looks shocking. You have my sympathies. We had all the ceilings done in a 1 bed bungalow a couple of years ago, from stippled artex type finish.

We paid £590 all in, I think it was a day and a half which he did while we were on holiday. He did a frankly perfect job, ceilings like millponds!

Looking at that photo, I dont think he should be anywhere near a plastering job!

Because he is thick as mince.

If it's any consolation, it makes me feel better about a DIY job that didn't come out perfect.

That's horrific.

Usually when artex is involved it's better to over board it and skim.

Checkatrade is simply a scam allowing chancers to buy an undeserved good reputation, based upon people having heard of it on TV.

My father got a chap he found on Checkatrade to take the bottom off a door. Instead of using a circular saw, this guy must have used a jigsaw with a blunt blade. The cut was all over the place.
Another one, a 'plumber' that dad got to look at the immersion heater tank, when asked to do a continuity check on the heater element, said, "I don't do electrical work".

They haven't sealed the periphery of the plasterboard.

Didn't know dot and dab was still common practice other than hiding uneven work underneath?

It's bloody awful!!!!

On the plus side it makes me feel so much better about a repair job I did on a window surround - it's shockingly bad but hidden behind a blind so can't really see it and it will get done properly one day - plastering is a skill that I think is hard learned and my efforts at repair taught me that it's not a DIY skill

yes

I did a 4 day course. The room I plastered afterwards looked like it had been done by Fed Flintstone.

Still better than Mr Checkatrade though.
