Have been using Johnstones water based aqua range on various rooms in the house but now its time to do the hallway and stairs.

A more old school painter decorator warned against it and to use oil based on this area for toughness.

Has anyone used water based paint on a banister? How has it lasted?

Mine was done about 5 years ago. The corners/edges that get handled the most need touching up about once a year but the rest looks good as new.

All white gloss paints are low VOC and go yellow after a short period, slightly tougher but they need to be redone after a short time.

Thanks gents - ill go with my original plan to do it myself with water based. Dont mind an annual touch up on the rail and end balls.

We have a 2 year old as well so the thought of strong smelling oil based paint near her bedroom doesnt sit well anyway.
