Currently have Trendnet IP-310 cameras set up around the house and they are around at a guess 10 years old. They are supposed to be 1080p but the picture quality looks rubbish - I cannot even read my number plate on the one covering the drive!

I already have ring floodlights etc. and they are set to record motions, but my back garden one I’ve turned the motion sensor off as my dog keeps triggering it.

As such I need my CCTV updated so that i have a ready recording.

Any recommendations on a set up that is absolutely super clear and slick ? Don’t mind paying for quality - just want something that is easy to identify people/things/number plates on, with a playback system that isn’t painful like my current NVR!

Thank you.

HikVision or a bit cheaper HiLook. A 4x 5mp POE HiLook ColourVu, 2tb NVR will set you back £350-400.

I recently upgraded from a ten year old Dahua system to a Hikvision system. The difference is night and day and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Hikvision. I’ll see if I can find some before and afters….

I would personally go for a POE system instead of a BNC setup. And the colourVu cameras and going to be better for night vision.

If you go with Hikvision ensure the firmware is up to date...

Hikvision Hacked by Faxociety - Your CCTV is Vulnerable and can be exposed at the moment.

There was also a program about this on TV last week. Hikvision and Dahua both had vulnerabilites.

Unifi app and kit is much slicker than Hikvision but also more expensive. Not Chinese either, which is a consideration these days.

I upgraded about 12 months ago and haven't regretted it for a second.

I've had HIK Vision at home and busines for several years and for the money have no completes whatsoever,on occasions at the business premises the Police have used the video footage for evidence with no problems, easy to use and maintain.

Sorry been slightly distracted with a garden project, so back to sorting out the CCTV - does the below look ok for the price?

Separately you can pick the cameras up for £135 each on ebay so £810, say £90 each for the disks, NVR is £160. So about £175 for getting all together and a warranty.

Listing says dome cameras, but turret cameras are pictured. Check what you’re actually getting. Dome cameras are a pain with regards to keeping clean and IR performance at night.

Agreed, we had two Hikvision dome ones in the last house and I was cleaning them every few weeks. Hikvision doesn't have a great name security wise but I suspect its no better than most of the 'Chinese brand' cameras.

Another vote for Hikvision here, I have a DS-7600 NVR with 7 x ColorVu 4MP fixed turret POE cameras - full colour day and night.

I was a little concerned about 'only 4MP' but was assured by a mate who does this for a living that they are better than many 8MP in cheaper makes and he was right.

Night vision is amazing, the cameras have a built in LED, so not only do they work well in the dark but they can be easily spotted at night which I consider to be an advantage, some people may not like that.

App works well, delighted with my choice.

Spiders love integral IR cameras! Mine are festooned daily in autumn.

I moved house recently and went from a traditional CCTV set up with a HDD and wired cameras to a Eufy wireless set up and I couldn't be happier.

I have a 16gb (expandable) local storage hub that connects directly to the router and two solar powered, wireless cameras. They have local AI so detect human movement so people and cars basically. Won't necessarily detect animals. I have one front and back of the house and I'm hugely impressed, picks up audio as well. Variety of other camera options, such as ones with power, a solar panel separate.

I like the fact that they're viewable from an app, plus there's no need to run additional cabling round the house.

Thanks for all your help.

Plan is to go for these, are they ok or overkill for a residential property ?

I picked up an external PTZ WiFi camera from AliExpress, 8mp built in pir led light.
8 x zoom and motion tracking, it’s got a micro storage card, you can set notifications for your phone and arrived in Les than a week.
Not cheap mind you, set me back nearly £30.

Based on what I have and have used for two years I would not spend more to go from 4MP to 8MP, but if you are not bothered about cost you can never have too many pixels smile

I have three of those, they’re fantastic.
