Hi all, greetings from Florida. I sent the message below to Eon.next but they’re refusing to look at the meter without a video. Any ideas?

I moved into my new build home 2 months ago. The electric meter was set up as a smart meter almost immediately but not the gas. I’ve been asking via Twitter for the gas meter to be set up as smart ever since but despite being told repeatedly that it was in hand nothing has happened.

I’ve been out of the country since November and not sure when I’ll be returning hence the need for smart meters. Since then I’ve been asking a friend to read the gas meter. When they went this morning they reported that the meter was dead though they tried repeatedly to awaken it by pressing both buttons. They sent me a photo of the dead meter but they have no means of taking a video which apparently you want before sending an engineer. This is an unreasonable requirement, I have no means of taking a video.

Clearly the gas meter is faulty and needs repairing or replacing.

In the meantime how does anyone know how much gas was used since the meter stopped? All I can say is the house has been unoccupied and kept at a steady 11c.

It's nearly 2023. A phone?

Our cleaner’s been reading the meter. She only has a very basic phone.

Nobody else who can go in? Throw her a few quid to pay for a friend / relative to go with her?
Sending a video would have been a hardship years ago, most people would find it straightforward now so it doesn't sound unreasonable. I appreciate that doesn't mean it's easy for you.

Surely you should just inform them in the absence of any way to prove otherwise you'll be assuming it to be zero?

That’s what I’ve been thinking. I could take the nuclear option and cancel the direct debit.
