How much energy do these use?
Surley theyve got to help turning things off every night and putting this back on when they are likely to be used, Do they cause a surge of electricity.
Just for note its for my older mother who cant get in the habbit of turning things off at the switch.

Just be aware of power cuts/trips or electrical works.

My very alert and quite tech savvy, early 80's Mum (200 Miles away) couldn't understand why her security lights were coming on during the day.

I tried all ways of explaining how they worked and what to do.
Alarm clock and setting the time/alarm analogy made it click.

For mechanical ones that's true, but the electronic ones aren't much more expensive and come with a battery backup, so a power cut doesn't throw the clock out. They are also much more capable, in terms of multiple on/off slots per day, they take weekends into account, and so on.
