I need to get hold of a doorbell type thing, that chimes just when someone comes through the door.

Basically a modern version of the old shop bells that used to be attached to the door on a spring.

Why can't I find a cheap and simple example of this? Is there a specific name for them that I don't know?

Reed switch plumbed into a wireless door bell

I have them on my outside gates

When someone opens the gate it chimes the bell

That, or if you have a burglar alarm you can probably program it to do it.

We have a simple Yale alarm and it chimes when external doors open (i have bad hearing so this is a nice feature)

This is what I have https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Siemens-Wired-To-Wirefr...

With a suitable receiver.

It just needs the connections bridging to cause the bell to ring. Where are you based op

Buy a Border Collie. It will bark at everything that comes near the premises! (mind you it will bark at everything even near the premises)

PIR detector should do the trick, might be a better option as its not dependant on door being opened or closed

100 yards! Pah.

I have two sight hounds (Saluki / Greyhound crosses) . They spot anything within a mile and go nuts. Love em to bits but they can be total tossers.

I saw them - but they are a 90db alarm that's more "burglar" alarm than a chime to let me know the door has been opened.

PIR ones won't work, it's very specifically a chime/beep/toot when the door is opened that I need.

Genuinely might just get one of the actual shopkeeper brass bells for old school charm... hehe

I have one of these door sensor chimes. The receiver/speaker plus into a wall socket and the sensors stick onto the door and frame. Has 50+ chime sounds to choose from, though most of them are crap, but there are 4 or 5 standard 'ding-dong' type chimes to choose from, and different volume levels.

If you can't find one on eBay, hang a small bell or bells on a piece of string so the door hits it when it opens.
