Ikea have some good kitchens too, contrry to the popular view that Ikea is "tat".

Mostly contemporary (white/red/black gloss, stainless steel) designs but I'm guessing that's what you're after?
They have very good kitchen planning staff in every store and also a handy planning tool that you can download from their site and play about with at home.

Not difficult to install a kitchen as long as you take your time, prepare everything (walls, floors, etc.) properly first and pay attention to details.
I designed and fitted my own kitchen in my last flat which included knocking a wall down.

Go for it. smile
yes we looked at these, but beware, the door sizes are different from anyone else, so you can't swap doors later
Are they? Not on my Ikea kitchen they ain't...

unreliable
kept sending the wrong stuff
sent damaged stuff
wanted £250 to dispose of the old stuff even after I had removed most of it.
( I ended up taking it all to the skip myself)
Started late
Over ran
Finished even later
Stuff not lined up properly
Had to have a second company in to do rectification work.
Stuff that was in the quote (£14k+) was "news" to the fitter
Fitter left with some things still outstanding, awaiting correct parts,
I had to chase the correct parts as B&Q said the fitter had not ordered them

Next on the list of projects is either an extension or the main family bathroom.
I seriously doubt B&Q will be involved,

ETA

The original planner who came to help design the kitchen knew less about what products they did that the wife did (she had studied the brochure).

B&Q guy says we can't have a breakfast bar as they do not do a long enough piece of granite.
Wife says "yes you do"
"Oh no we don't"

continues in Panto mode until wife finds B&Q brochure and points out piece of granite that is longer that we need and can be cut down.

What kind of costs was it to have someone come and fit it and remove the old one or is that included in the price?

Moben were very impressive, actually rang us up and said they had a cancellation could they come a week early, of course we said yes, 3 guys came fitted the whole thing in 12 hours (they worked their socks off) about 2 hours before they finished they called the electrician to come and wire everything in, and in the last half an hour a guy came to take away all the rubbish, fantastic.

...and according to a cursory glance at diy.com kitchens are 1/2 price at the minute, not 15% as stated.

Work of advice.

Avoid the shaker style doors as any joints in cupboard doors, esp under the sink area will let water in and cause delamination od te chipboard.

Look closely at the carcases.

Some of them, the cheap ones are realy ste.

Mum and Dad have a Wickes kitchen and it is very good. They had to wait for 4 months though for Wickes recommeded kitchen fitter to come and install.

Since then they re-fitted my old room with Wickes built in bedroom furniture (really nice stuff).

They are supposedly buying me a bathroom from Wickes too.

Ikea kitchens? Here's one I did earlier nearly complete:

Well, we had someone install it as it was for my mum and she wanted it done in "two weeks, not two months". I did all the design at home and produced my own working drawings in Autocad. It's not hard, and I quite enjoy the planning and bringing together of a project. You may notice a few eccentricities in the above kitchen; it was designed around my mum's needs as she uses a wheelchair. Due alterations were made to suit. One year on and barring a door she's ripped off with her powered chair which would have happened no matter the kitchen, it's as you would expect; excellent.

It's one of many Ikea kitchen I've designed (fitted only the one) they do make it very easy, the quality is good and I found them substantially cheaper than the usually rivals; total cost of my Ikea flat kitchen in solid oak was the same as only the units in a wood effect laminate from Homebase inc 20% discount.

The worktops are a slightly different width, but Ikea will do various options in house from laminates to solid wood and other options to order. Again their worktops are comparatively cheap as are their taps and sinks.

One word of warning; order everything directly from their warehouse. They wont have 100% of all the kit you need in store and it's a ballache to pick yourself anyway.

Pretty much our experiences too.

Ours would probably have been ok if we'd bought the bits & got a reliable decent fitter to install it.

At least MFI are out of the equation, got banned from there after trying to fit one of their kitchens for a customer.

Nice i like.

Only real issue i have is that its a square room with a window on one side, unfortunately being a victoria house, the window is 2 1/2 - 3 foot off the floor which means i lose a side of the wall to put cabinets against or i put them up but they go over where the window is and im not sure if that will work without ruining the overall look and feel of the kitchen and not make it as highly finished as i want.

Moben have been in administration a couple of times.

We've just ordered a kitchen for Dad from B&Q and so far I've been pretty impressed. The price was good, they had 50% off cabinets etc. plus an additional 15% on everything else. The guy who did the planning with us was switched on and understood the challenges of planning for someone with limited mobility, listened to what we wanted and came up with a good design.

We're not having their fitters or anything and we'll be fitting in a new extension so some of the problems are avoided.

I really like the look of Ikea kitchens and if we could have got Dad to one we would have been interested. IIRC someone told me that there are some issues in that their cabinets don't have space behind them for pipes or cabling or something along those lines? Might be rubbish though.....
