The 30 degrees is a thermostat setting, NOTHING to do with the temperature of the air coming out.

As long as the defrosting is working correctly (outdoor unit should defrost every half hour), not much else you can do.

You have a course now worked out that small high wall heat pumps aren't very good as a form of central heating.
Yep I get that now! I did kind of expect the unit to be able to work as a heater as well, but evidently it’s not great at heating a space if the outdoor temp is below 5C. That’s my feedback for this thread.

I think those units are known for not being ideal for less than 5c in the room - they recommend an alternative source of heating. Something like that. Once the delta improves it will be able to cope.

Tbh the tip I’d recommend is leaving it on. Then it never drops down low and can stay on tickover. I do this with my mini split and it uses less power overall by some margin. This means it’s never trying to “lift” the room by a huge amount. Even my mini when it’s super cold from a standing start would be flat out for a good hour.

I’ve bought one for our loft conversion mainly for cooling, hard to get a multi split or mini in and technically not planning compliant as we already have one onsite. Plus the cost is more than double!

Paid £144 total last year to service 3 indoor units, in NE Mids. Seemed to be just a check over, test, clean filters.

If they aren’t checking running temperatures and maybe pressures and performing a basic leak check, all of which can only be done by accessing the outdoor unit as well then there is nothing there you couldn’t do yourself

Hi all,

I've received the following quote from Hampshire/Surrey. I was originally told £4k (no VAT), but it went up with the addition of a bit of trunking and changing to a "twin" system with one outside unit only. He has since said he could do "commercial" Samsungs with two outdoor units for £4k, but these need 10A each, and I only have a 16A "fused super" feed available, which we will sacrifice our immersion heater for (I think this will be sufficient, and we don't use the immersion).

1x Panasonic twin system:
1x wall mount 3.5KW Master bedroom
1x wall mount 2.5KW Kids bedroom
£4800 (no VAT)

Thoughts on the costs or my options? I'm tempted to do one of the DIY versions mentioned on this thread myself (I can't remember the brand).

Thanks

We’ve just literally ours fitted, similar spec, one is low wall mounted and the other has a long pipe run to the main master bedroom. Total cost just over £4k installed.

That does seem a lot but this is maybe the worst time of year to get a quote as we're just going into a hot spell...

I paid less than half that for 2 x 2.5kW Premium MHI units but the Panasonic units are a level up from what I've heard and you'll also need a larger outdoor unit that my 4.5. I was also advised not to go for Samsung due to reliability and warranty issues. Maybe get a couple more quotes if not already?

Give me an address - and I'll come and fit them in a couple of weeks (just kidding).

4,800 for two small heat pumps installed! Talk about taking the piss.

The two units shouldn't cost more than 1000 pounds (1200 with VAT).

A thousand for an install is grossly excessive, unless there is something very difficult about it.

I've put in quite a few (in New Zealand), the last one for a friend I think the install was 400 pounds, but it was straightforward.

A 3.5kW unit will draw about 1kW, 5 amps - can you come off the ring main in the UK?

That does seem a lot. We paid for 2x9kw external units, 5x2.5 internal units and 1x5kw. Total cost was 8.5k and that was with the super premium mitsubishi electric units. (Last year's prices mind)

Are they coming back to fit ducting over that?

Units aren't commissioned yet, waiting for builders to finish cladding over the pipe work, and sparkies to come bring out power supply. Bill will be settled when the units are commissioned.

Isn't saything this the same as saying tiling, woodwork etc are all easy to do, so why bother paying tilers/builders?

The reality is whilst some people are happy to do it themselves, I'm quite happy to pay someone else to do it in exchange for money. It saves me time and hassle.

What I find more amazing is I paid to essentially type stuff out on my laptop/iPad, which is so difficulty my 8 year old can already type almost as well smile.

Thanks. It is a bit fiddly because we need to get the pipework past or through the roof (chalet bungalow with a "skeiling") and into the eaves void, then through the soffit to ground level for the external units.

The above is another reason I want to do it myself tbh.

Looking at the following, but do they also sell the long hose kits? https://www.serversdirect.co.uk/p/1344505/multi-sp...

We went for black ducting ( although that was with Suffolk red brick exterior) I think it looks alright.

I guess you'd go with white to match the cladding?

Honestly AC ducting is the last thing on the job list. Around the more visible aspect of the house the AC pipes will run behind cladding, and than hidden under the lower brick line when new render is put on around the front. For the unit going into my daughters room, honestly don't care, it wouldn't be visible to anyone.
