A family member had a fire at their home last week but couldnt do much apart from crying while his front room went up in flames, as it was an electrical fire and the electric cupboard was behind the TV so he couldnt be too liberal with the water. frown

He is now on a mission for everyone to get a home fire extinguisher, so I just wondered who on PH has them?

I know what he will be giving me for xmas this year!*

Yep and one in the car. On powder on C02 IIRC, we also have a fire blanket in the kitchen for pan fat fires.

I have a fire blanket in the kitchen, and a small fire extingusher in the car, mainly for camping rather than for a car fire.

Unless you have been trained in the use of fire extinguishers, and have a suitably large one (such as the ones you find in offices etc) then they don't do much except keep you in a burning building.

The old addage, get out, get the fire brigade out, stay out works for me.

House has a sprinkler system inside. Lots of plastic circles on the ceiling which apparently pop down and start sprinkling. Also is location specific so if a bedroom fire occurs it doesnt fry the tv in the loungs etc. Runs on a separate water supply from the house. Hopefully never find out if it works!

I've got a few lying around the house, when you live in a 700 year old house that's thatched it helps to have something close to hand.

Although the only time i nearly torched the house, i used the garden hose.
I got a bit over enthusiastic with the coal and set the chimney on fire, so after throwing water on the coal fire and it exploding (thank god there's york stone flooring) i had to then use the hose to extinquish the chimney before it started throwing embers out the top and onto the thatch.

Have 2 in the garage in case something important goes up in flames.
None in the house though. Isn't that what house insurance is for?

Damnit. I keep meaning to have "something".

Guys with dry powder I remember something about them having a shelf life as the powder can "clump" and then it becomes a good club but bugger all use for fighting a fire.

I have one in the kitchen. I guess it depends if you ever had a friend or family member who had a house fire... in my case two seperate friends who lost everything they owned. The first time nobody was at home, but in the second incident a fire extinguisher might have limited the damage to one room.

PS: Get a main-powered smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide detector too!

I think most people would be wiser to keep a phone somewhere to hand rather than tackle a fire that could kill you.

I don't have anything in the house - as said before - better to get yourself out than try to fight a fire with a small extinguisher (Which if not serviced probably won't work when needed anyway)

I do keep a small car one in the garage in case I get a bit enthusiastic with the welding etc!
