Another tax return issue
Discussion
Right - I've cocked up
I haven't done my tax return - as my Accountant normally does it.
However I went off piste last year and got a sort of permie job
I assumed it would be done - just realised it hasn't been - my fault
how hard is it for me to do personally for the first time?
I have my UTR
I have my P60 and my P45
will I be able to construct something on Saturday? Or do I need other things?
Arse - I know I will be fined but getting it sorted is all I need
Help!

Yes - you can only fine on-line now and if you haven't organised your on-line authentification codes, even if you applied for one now, by the time HMRC send it to you it will be too late.
Why can't the accountant who did it for yuou previously have a go at doing it for you now? He should have much of the basic data already in place.
What does "sort of permie" meam?
Are you a PAYE employee?
Are you a sole-trader?
Do you operate your own limited company?

I was a Ltd company when my accountant last did it for me. I then went employed on a offshore scheme.
I felt uncomfortable with the people I was dealing with - even tho it was legit.
So I ditched them on contract change and went back to Ltd.
Same accountant for Ltd before and after offshore - but - I wouldn't know how to explain the offshore thing in the middle to him.
Hence me wanting to do this one myself

I think the best course of action is talk to your accountant. I think you'll just have to face up to the fact that the 2009/10 return will be late - but you need desperately to find out how much tax you owe for 2009/10 and, if there is a liability, ensure it is paid in full by 28 February.
As I said on another thread, if you owe a substantial amount for 2009/10, having the 5% late payment surcharge applied to the liability after 28 February is often far worse than the £100 late tax return penalty.

In addition call your tax office now and talk to them.
I should have done a return for 07/08 and 08/09. I realised I should be doing one in December 09 and so intended to do it in late Jan 10. At that point i hadn't realised that it takes about 7-10 days to get the account set up and so I was going to miss the deadline for 08/09 to be filed. I called the tax office and spoke to them about it all, fully expecting 'computer says no' answers. They were very good to me though and told me not to worry they would be in touch. 3 months later (just as I was starting to get bad vibes!) they sent me a letter saying that they only required me to do a return for 09/10.
I suspect it is a question of if there is likely to be anything to pay or not though.
As for how easy it is quite straight forward but I would suggest that you have a good read of the guidance notes before you even look at the Return. If you have a halfway logical brain and good records it will not tax the little gray cells much.
