I've just realised that my student bank account hasn't changed over to a normal account when I graduated and as such still have an intrest free overdraft. When I tell the bank I've graduated (and when) can they backdate any interest on the overdraft?

Ask your bank, but you used to be able to keep your student account for a yer after graduation. Have you started earning over £1000 a month yet? As thats a normal criteria for a standard current account.

I very much doubt they can backdate the interest. Before changing the rate on the account they would need to give you 30 days or so notice as new t&c's will apply.

Chances are the account will be picked up as part of an auto-review and changed in due course so best to sit tight, unless of course you need to change accounts to get a facility you need.

Who do you bank with?

I know Natwest offer a scheme where they gradually start to charge interest bit by bit.

Thanks all, it's a Barclays account if it makes any difference.

I know my graduate HSBC account didn't charge me any interest for a decent period 6-12 months after I graduated and then they reduced the overdraft limit bit by bit when I started earning so OP you may not be an idiot.

Mine had 12 months post graduation to change over iirc but that was in 1999/2000

When i graduated i changed my bank for Barclays to RBS as there graduate account offered £2000 over draft at 0%. The overdraft gradually decreasing over 4 years £500 per year.

I am unsure of the offers today but shop around

My Barclays student account remained for several years after graduation. Must have been an oversight.
