Just popped to my bank, queued for 20 mins to get to the counter.

When I get there I ask for £1900 cash please and hand over my card. However, I am told that this is not possible and to withdraw that much I need to give 'notice'. My money can be ready for me on Thursday - would I like to order it?

So this is my money and I can't get it out?

I'm afraid so comes the reply, but I can take out £800 a day over the counter or £500 from the machine. To which I reply that this method would take longer than ordering the cash as he suggests. He replies 'yes' with a helpful grin.

So I now have to go back on Thursday and queue up again banghead

I realise this is leaving me open for witty 'cool story' type replies, but I'm pretty annoyed. Is £1900 that much these days? I've been with this bank for approx 15 years, never been overdrawn and have even had a mortgage with them. You'd think they would be more helpful

Oh well, not a lot I can do about it right now except wait until Thursday and consider other banks.....

Never overspent in 15 years and managed to pay off your mortgage already?

PH pay you far too much, where can we vote to redress the issue?

Alternatively, could I have a job?

More importantly, what old Merc/Porsche/Rangie are you buying for 1900 pounds?

Never been overdrawn, my Dad told me it wasn't a good idea when I was 17 and I've lived by that all my life, even when earning £5500 a year in the 90's.

Mortgage? Sold the house during the boom after a relationship split. Paid it off, split the balance.

just because it's a small branch, maybe, or throughout the whole network?

Which st bank is this? I'd understand £5k+, but they should have £1900 lying about. I've had £3k on the day with just a phone call to check first.

Had this problem a few years back.

On asking got told, "Its because we actually don't keep much cash in the bank & would run out if we gave out too much in one go. This is why it needs to be specially ordered".

Try a different branch, With Barclays I've never had a problem getting 2K out with no notice

Actually I use the term 'bank' but should have said building society. I use Nationwide and visited their Twickenham branch as it's the nearest to the PH office.

Barclays have always been spot on for me in this respect. I took 5k out last week without notice. Any more and they said I'd have to book it, but it wasn't a problem. Regularly take 1-2k out without any problem.

A couple of times I've walked into Natwest and withdrawn over £4k cash with nothing more than my card and driving license as photo ID with no prior warning. They always ask what its for - as much as I'm tempted to say "hard drugs" I always tell the truth.

Garlick - is it a bank or a building society?

I guess they don't want you to ruin their cashflow. Turning you down for £1900 will mean they can give many more people £100.

Aha this is the difference, building societies don't tend to hold as much cash as proper banks.

I must admit that I didn't know that.

Super-straight looking LS that, Paul. So much car for the money – and that's quite a dear one for the year!
£2k puts you right in the rusty Merc danger zone so this is a good choice I reckon.

You'd think that a PH mod would know how the naming and shaming rules work FFS.
