I have been waiting since November 9th for a replacement debit card after I lost my wife's debit card in the house which meant them cancelling both our cards. I have been without cash from my current account for 4 weeks unless I am prepared to drive into town and take my passport into my branch and leave my left ear on the counter for the favour. Today I get 4 cards turn up but still no PIN number. 'Help' lines in both UK and India contradict each other and can't sort it. Their complaints dept are even less use.

Quick, move your money back under the mattress so these 'newly Spanish' muppets can't have it.

Mostly by all being equally useless and customer apathy, you're more likely to change your religion than your bank in the UK (a statistic I just made up).

Most people have a horror story (or 5) about their banks, but are still with them.

My Dad banks with Nationwide, they constantly sod his accounts up, his online locks him out all the time, occasionally they'll cancel his cards for 'suspect foreign purchases' AKA buying flights and calling cards in Bahrain, even though he lives there. Oh and they pulled his 25k OD and 15k CC limits without notice because in the rare occasions he uses them he always clears the balance within 24 hours / when the bill arrives - left him very embarrassed and stranded in Malaysia once.

He moans to me about it for hours when I see him, but still wont move banks.

It would be much easier for them to get it right. I mean just think how much effort it takes to get it so wrong.

I've been lucky with our Spanish "friends" but on the rare occasion when I do have to interact with them it's a nightmare. Just trying to get a person to take responsibility. Thank god for Internet banking

Try First Direct. You ring them up, they fix it. Never had a problem with them in 10+ years.

I made the mistake of migrating to Alliance and Leicester chasing interest rates 3 or 4 years ago. Luckily I stil have my Yorkshire Bank current and savings accouint so the move back won't be too tough. I had left almost all of my DDs there and was transferring a lump sum each month to cover them so A&L will be history. Main problem is that A&L have my ISAs on a 'special rate' until 2011 so they can stay for the minute and my business accounts but again I still have my YB versions (although all my clients have take 3 years to strat using the A&L BACS).

I agree it would be much easier for them just to get it right. I had a lengthy convesation with their compliants unit who admitted the santander take over was being rushed and their IT and organisation couldn't cope. What I detest is the second class treatment once they have your account.

I will look at First Direct but it is daunting to have to set everything up afresh.

Many have and many are rectifying this issue. Long may it continue. They dont deserve anyone's business. You will lose more money through their incompetence than you make in interest.

Is this a serious question?

I don't think you need to worry about the banks making money.

Banks lose money, people whine. Banks make money, people whine then, too.

If we could harness all of this whining that our existence causes, we could do away with our air conditioning, I think, and make a few million a year more profit.

I'm not really stalking you, I just come on here and point out when people are posting crap about finance. For some reason every post that fits that description has your name next to it at the moment.

You do half spout some rubbish.

How do they make money? By paying 0.2% interest and lending at 3 - 25%.

However, apart from saving rates, +1 for 1st Direct. Have been with them since about a year after they started, and apart from one error (which they sorted immediately) I've had no problems at all.
