HI guys, just got into Edinburgh from Australia and am trying to open a bank account with the RBS but it is proving very difficult. I have a settlement Visa and my wife is British. She has a credit card with the RBS but apparently it is not linked to normal accounts. She can get an account on her own but not with me in a joint account. I need to validate my address.

The branch said I need a Tax Code - Called HMRC and they said I have to have a job before they will issue me one.
They said they won't accept a NI number - Even have to make an appointment to get one of those at a Job centre.

They will accept something with my name on it like a utilities bill - I am living with my inlaws for a bit. I don't have anything in my name!

I can't even get a phone contract without a bank account.

Any advice on what to do?

Should I try HSBC?

NAB is Clydesdale Bank/Yorkshire Bank over here. I would give them a try but suspect they'll also be bound by the same rules.
