After days of ringing Santander to get them to sort the simplest of problems, without success, I have decided to switch back to using my old Yorkshire Bank current account which I had never closed just in case A&L (now Santander)made a mess of basic customer service, which they have. I had left almopst al of my direct debits on the old YB account. But in the meantime I have unwittingly acquired a few Direct Debits on the new account for my mobile phone and a credit card payment (probably the Satander card). If just cancel these DDs will the companies contact me to ask for new payment details?

I would be really careful with mobile phone firm dds. They are very happy to go for a default or ccj, I would get in touch with the and make sure its properly sorted.
(and keep notes of every phone call, date/time etc)

Good advice, you cannot reply upon efficiency from anyone really anymore, as I am finding.

They normally will, but what I would do is cancel the payments and then phone them to set a new one up, then there is no chance of being charged twice.

I tried this. Many of the firms did write to me, some however were a bit harsh, in cutting off phone services etc. Council Tax were particularly nasty, and we had words. Safer to contact them, in hindsight.

Just as well I checked as my utility company charge £10 if you cut off without telling them first. Now just have to sort Vodafone when their site comes back up and I think the last one is just the Santander credit card anyway.

For the record, banks are lying, inefficient, inward looking, self-centred fools.

Quick update. Today is Jan 9th, exactly 2 months since I first reported my wife's card lost. Only yesterday did I finally get both a card and a PIN number. My wife is still waiting for hers. Popped into Santander to make ararngements to close the accounts: have to make an appointment as 'it may take some time'.

Santander should provide all ddr details to your new bank - it was part of the new banking practices introduced a few years ago to make it easy to change banks.

Suggest you ask them about the outbound transfer process.

I did this - from Nat West to Halifax - it all went OK
Like above, they have proper teams for this kind of thing nowadays.

Santander is by far the worst bank i'd the mispleasure of dealing with in the past.
Absolutely fking hopeless.

And customer services were based overseas, they had no clue what i wanted - go to local branch to sort it out, only to be passed back onto customer services over the phone.
