Not being a serial poster on here but read most topics with interest, I find myself requiring some sound financial advice.
I had a Halifax credit card which was fully cleared of all debt around 18 months ago. I cannot remember the exact amount but I think it was around 5k.
Anyway, I kept on receiving statements saying that the balance is £0 which I figured was fine and then the card expired in August. When we got back from holiday in August a new credit card had arrived with a limit of 10.5k on it.
I decided I did not require it so in the bin it went in pieces.
Since then, I have been getting threatening letters from the Halifax saying I owed them £23 plus interest etc. etc. for "card care"? and suggesting they would take the money from my childrens savings accounts.
I eventually managed to get thru to them on the phone (which was an Odyssey in itself) and informed them I did not want the card and was not going to pay anything as the card was in the bin.
Now I have Albion debt collectors ringing me...
Any suggestions?

Was chopping up the card the correct option originally?

Was there some clause in the original issue of the card stating that unwanted cards should be returned and that inaction represented agreement to accept the card?

(I'm not saying that this argument would stand up in court, but that might be their point of view).

Sounds like you have taken out extra card protection that helps you in the case of losing your card.

Its usually an annual fee so it looks like you have failed to pay and they are coming after you

It would continue on regardlss of balance.

Did you agree to it or not at the start of the agreement? or maybe partway through via a sales call?

I have never had any kind of protection on any credit card, and told them verbally on the original card in 2008 that I did not require it so they cancelled it.
Saying that, I had a card with the Nationwide that I took out in 2006 which had a limit of 7.5k and never used it and have not heard from them since.

This is crazy. I suggest a firm letter to Halifax, cc'ed to the debt collector, stating your case and asking for the exact reasons that they have charged you. At the end of the day if they have a point and you should have returned the card it may be best to offer to pay the £23 (without any interest/charges) to end it. If not you could end up with a bad credit rating and all the hassle that will come with that. If it goes on and on you could end up being charged for the debt collector's charges as well.
