Just started a new job and I have decided I want to go sub-contract, but I don't know the first thing about it all.
Where do I start? What do I need to do/consider?
Thanks

What field are you in? There are lots of websites for IT contractors.

And do the circumstances surounding the engagement support your "decision".

Were you given the option of being an employee but chose not to be?

Oil and gas - offshore.
Currently staff at the moment, but will be better off as sub-contract due to me not being local to Aberdeen.
Cheers

Better off in what way - tax? work? costs?

HMRC will tell you that neither you nor your employer can "chose" whether you are an employee or not. They will say that the nature of the relationship with the organisation for whom you work determines whether you are an employee or some other arrangement exists.

You need to be careful.

Work related - because I am not local to the office it doesn't suit the work pattern when onshore.
All the local guys are staff, and all the other guys that stay a bit further away are sub-contract.

That, in itself, will not justify a non-PAYE staus. You will need to look into all the aspects of "self employment" before you can consider that you really ARE self employed.
