Compensation from Santander
Discussion
I recently went ahead with a switch from HSBC to Santander, oh how much I regret that now!! Some of the stuff that has happend I have mentioned here
http://pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... current account
Well today I have had enough. I found out today that a standing order went missing. The money had left my account today to credit another account for my mortgage payment. That payment I then got told could take 4 days to clear! No good to me as the mortgage was due today, and I had been assured in previous conversations it would be fine and the money will be there in time. They did manage to sort the money out for me so my payment was still made on time. However, this took almost a full day on he phone to them to sort, 2 trips to the local branch and 2 trips to my old bank. Finaly got it sorted at 4pm! This made it 5 weeks running I have been into the branch to sort the transfer, each time being assured that it's all sorted now.
This has been the final straw for me and I decided to file an official complaint with them. I don't know what to expect or what to accept so looking for peoples opinons? Has anyone had similar problems or experiences with them? Being honest I wasn't looking for any money to compensate but it was someone else suggested it to me and I thought yeah why not, I've had enough so why the hell not!
To top all this off, I was meant to be at work today. But work gave me the day off for my 30th birthday which was today, to go and enjoy myself. Instead I spend it sorting this banks poor service they provide. Nice way to spend a relaxing day!
Needless to say I have explained to HSBC my previous problems with them and why I had made a switch and I am going back to see them to try and sort these and switch back to them. My faith has been lost in Santander once and for all. If this is how bad it has been in 5 weeks with variosu problems then I have no faith in them for the future and see no reason to stay!

My only dealings with Santander have left me with an impression of gross incompetence. They are monumentally st as evinced by the many stories all over t'web.
Move to another bank now and save yourself the grief.
^^^^^ what he said. It took me over 6 months to sort out their cocked up attempt at transferring my old account with Halifax and in the process totally screwed my credit rating. I'm now with First Direct and haven't looked back. I've found them to be 1st class. Time to get the he'll out and find a proper bank.....Move to another bank now and save yourself the grief.

told you to be careful with direct debits etc
Indeed you did mention it. Being honest I have no problems with the way in which they have handled the complaint and they have so far been able to help to try and resolve the issue. But it is the fact that I have had this hassle in the first place.CerbitonFlyer said:

Living abortions, move before you kill yourself!
My colleague has already moved his from A&L aka stander. We are also moving our business account and Im moving my current account.
The list of fkups is extensive and deep. No point me going into detail. Summary is move before you are forced to commit suicide.
I can add an ever greater tale of woe! We are in the process of moving away from Santander (we are with the A&L part). We had no issues in the five years we were with them but needed to change banks to get the best mortgage deal (self employed with only two years figures cut our options).
Our new bankers sent a request to A&L twice to get details of our DD's etc. so that we could transfer over. When they didn't get a reply, they sent another. After 5 weeks and no success they wrote to us to ask if we could get the details for them. This is where the trouble really started. They said they would investigate why our Bank hadn't received the list and call us back. They didn't! So, we called again and asked for the list, confirmed that we wouldn't be staying with A&L, and were told this would be actioned. Great!
This happened on the Thursday and my wife happily went off to London for the weekend to stay with a friend. However, when she tried to get money out the cupboard was bare! Infact, there was no account to draw money out of. The tts at A&L had closed the main account and sent us a cheque for the balance! However, they didn't shut the savings account which was connected to it - that was still open. Unfortunately, the only way you can move money from that account is to the current account (which we no longer had) so we couldn't get any money from there either! bds!
We had DD's to go out on the Monday and we had cheques that has been presented but not cleared. We were straight back on to the A&L who said they'd check and call us back. They didn't so we phoned again. Again they said they would sort it and someone would call us back. Again, nothing. Finally, on Thursday we had a guts full and phoned the Ombudsman. They were fantastic and within no time A&L were on the case - the list would be sent, the account was re-opened so that the DD's could be honoured, they put money in the account to cover the fee a supplier of ours had incurred when our cheque bounced (we had to send a new cheque plus the fee) and they put a further £50 in the account as compensation.
And the final insult - we're still waiting for the cheque 10 fking days after they closed the account!!!
I would't touch them with a stty stick in future!

I must have been lucky as I haven't had a single issue since I moved over 3 years ago ( A&L) and I run both Business and Personal accounts through them. I fear I amy eat those words with the switch over from the A&L to the Santander online banking due shortly.Move to another bank now and save yourself the grief.

As I said in my post I'd had no issue for 5 years. It just appears that if you upset the status quo, the st really does hit the fan and they are worse than useless at getting it sorted. Flintstone said:

Whilst trying to get a mortgage offer, at the 4th attempt, I reported the mortgage advisor to the FSA for incompetence. Despite this, and making a formal complaint about the process at the regional level, nothing further was done. There doesn't seem to be any accountability in this organisation whatsoever.
I was with Abbey for around ten years, spent the last four trying to get a copy of an old statement with details of a payment I made. The last straw was when they told me they'd now destroyed microfiches of old statements, as they were not required to keep them more than 6 (IIRC) years. I took them to the financial ombudsman who were helpful and acted swiftly, so I received an apology from Abbey and a paultry sum of money (£100 or something) which would have amounted to minimum wage for the time I spent writing to them, ringing them, and being lied to in person. I have no idea if they've improved since becoming Santander, but my advice is to find a decent* bank and don't expect much if any compensation for their failings. * e.g. Nationwide

I have accounts with most high street banks, RBS, Natwest (RBS Group), HSBC, First Direct (HSBC Group), Santandont do it!
They nearly messed my house purchase up, again instant transfer takes 4 fookin days, what all others is instant!!!!
Use HSBC, First Direct. Never had a prob with these.
Just to update those of you who are interested, I had to call Santander today to find out if they had any update on my complaint. They said that they had the complaint down as closed and that the matter was resolved! So I have said it isn't in my eyes so they will be re-opening the matter and exsculating it to a higher level and will get back to me with in 5 days with a letter of appology and telling me what they will be doing for me to restore my confidence in Santander.
