Hi,

I’m trying to get home contents insurance for our house. The property is owned by my girlfriends parents so it already has building insurance, we just need to get contents insurance. I’m keen for it to cover my bicycle (new value in 2008 c. £3,600), my iPhone 4 and ipod away from home. I would also like accidental damage cover for the phone and other items around the house including computer and TV. Nothing in the house is worth over £2,000 with the exception of my bike (although it’s not worth that much anymore admittedly).

Any advice or recommendations? On the cycling forum people are swearing by the M&S Premium cover which covers any item up to £4,000 but it’s proving quite expensive for me at over £400 with all the optional add-ons. Is this quite pricey? I’ve not bought home contents insurance before. Not sure I need all the add-ons either.

Also, am I understanding this right? Personal effects are covered as standard with the basic policy. So this includes mobile phones and mp3 players away from home, but not for accidental damage, right? This is only at home? If you buy the optional contents cover away from home, this will also cover accidental damage, and cover my bike and anything else from home, yes?

Are there other companies I should be looking at who offer similar amount of cover?

Many thanks for any help you can give to a home insurance numpty!

Dan

Also, some of my home cinema gear I purchased used so I don't have receipts for. How are these covered by the insurance company? How do I prove I owned them if anything was stolen?
