Morning all,

Trying to find some facts/figures regarding cost of living increases over the past couple of years. As is the case of many in the private sector, I've had no increase in salary of late and am curious to see by what amount I have lost out relative to cost of living increasing (if indeed it has).

I've had a quick look at the ONS website, but I'm struggling to interpret the mass of information provided and googling the subject returns a large number of results relating the the states, and Coca-Cola - although the latter may be used as a refence I suppose (cost of a can now vs a year ago)?

Grateful for any guidance - TIA!

The latest figures are out tomorrow, but these are the most recent:

http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=19

Those are year to date figures therefore if you haven't had a pay rise in the last year you have, in effect, had a reduction of 3.2% (through less buying power).

Someone far more qualified than me will no doubt correct me on this but I think the CPI relates more to goods you buy whereas RPI includes factors such as increases in property values.

For links to the government data on RPI CPI etc. see the third post in this thread.

From those links you can see all sorts of interesting stuff about the figures over many decades - rates, how they are calculated, how the things people buy change over time.
