I opened an account on-line with Jarvis: http://www.x-o.co.uk/
5.95 per trade.
Careful though....Mrs oilydan has so far lost me nearly 50 pounds
Do you have a hot tip as to how I might get it back

I'd use an online share account. I've used the bank quite a few times, but the charges tend to be a bit higher ( I think I pay about 15 a trade if I use the bank, or 9 quid if I use my share account).
Somewhere like moneysupermarket will have a comparison you can look at. X-O are about the cheapest I know of.

Anyone use HSBC?
Im in the process of signing up to use their system (its taking a while since I have to setup internet banking as well). Just wondering If anyone has had any note worthy experiences with them.
They charge £12.95 that lows if you're a frequent user though.
The main reason we're using them is because they already hold the money and they have a physical presence, Im slightly nervous about using a company I've never encountered anywhere but online for this amount of money.

I have a halifax Halifax shareb dealign account. I have also registered for their sharebuilder account.
There are restrictions, but you can buy for £1.50 a purchase. This is restricted to certain dates a month, adn UK equities only but it's worth looking at if you only want to purchase on-off or small amounts, or set up regular monthly purchases as part of a personal share saving/purchase scheme.
You can still purchase at £11.50 commission for buying and tax as part of the normal Share dealign account. £5 for selling is charged at all times.
