I made a payment via CHAPS with Barclays to release a car, on a Friday, prior to a Bank Holiday Monday. The dealer was to release the car for work I had requested to be done before a test session. The test session and other incidentals were paid after CHAPS had been initiated with the Bank.

Bank rings at ~4pm to say they screwed up and the money wont be arrive until Tuesday. These means I cant attend the test session, as work wont be competed in time (as it can't start until Tuesday) unless I hire a car, which I do.

I claimed against Barclays for my costs as a result of their incompetence. They rejected the claim due to errors in their facts. They claim that I rejected another form of payment and hence my fault. The other form of payment was Fast Transfer, another same day service. However by the time they realised the mistake it was 4pm past the deadline for such a transaction.

Could someone confirm what the limits are on a Barclays Fast Transfer, and at what time they need to be made to guaranty delivery same-day.

I got caught by Lloyds (Business - not Personal).

We have normally used CHAPS for 'special' payments rather than the BACS. But Lloydslink had incorporated the Fast Payments, with reduced fees, so I thought it was worth saving the money.

The payments was about £25k. The supplier was querying where the money was. Turns out there is a £10k limit with Lloyds for faster payments. They had cancelled the transaction - but never informed me !!

I also guess that there is something written down in small print that states 'normally same day but....' and 'we bear no liability for .....'

The faster payments can be done at anytime of the day. However it can take up to 2 hours. £10k in all cases

What reason did they give for not making the payment? How much are you asking from them to cover costs?

The day I exchanged on my house in the late '90s my bank phoned apologising for transferring my deposit twice to the solicitor's client account. Not surprisingly, my account didn't contain twice the amount of a house deposit...and as a savings account, overdrafts were not allowed. Needless to say, they didn't charge me for the second transfer.

Back to topic - unfortunately I suspect that they will have a "no liability for consequential losses.." phrase or similar in the small print.
