Pension drawdown - why the IFA?

Hopefully a simple question!

I want to take a lump sum out of my pension pot - rang Scottish Widows to discuss this and they told me to go through my IFA or a Lloyds TSB advisor.

Does my IFA gain financially by going through him, or are ScotWid wanting to make sure I have good advice before proceeding?
