Due to an error (forgetting to cancel a standing order) Alliance and Leicester have managed to charge me £65 for going £107 overdrawn for 8 days on a standard current account.

This breaks down as follows:

a one off 'Payment Review Fee' of £25

an 'exceeding overdraft limit fee' @ £5 a day = £40

This seems outrageous to me - is there anything I can do?

Unfortunately you would have agreed to these charges in the t's and c's of your current account. Just be thankful you weren't with Lloyds. My OH got stung to the tune of £308 by going £1.67 overdrawn in an account she thought she had closed. It was her own fault for not being properly organised but I highly doubt the punishment fits the crime.

As I said, it is a st to deal with but you can treat this as a very expensive lesson on finance management.

Silly charges like that is why some poor people that always work on the edge of their bank account get into so much trouble!

Poor people "on the edge of their bank account" should know their cash flow situation and be able to meet their financial obligations. Part of the reason this country is in the mire it is, but that is a pointless and endless row for another thread I shan't be getting involved in.

You might find this useful: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/bank-char...

Some banks have restructured their overdraft charges to charge by the day so it may be worth considering switching to a more suitable account if you think this may happen again in the future.

Go speak to your bank manager and explain the situation - if you haven't been overdrawn before they can reverse the charges if they want to.

A&L will cancel charges once in a 12 or 24 month period (can't remember which)

On the phone to them now and they've offered to refund the £25 as "a gesture of goodwill"....a pleasant surprise.
