My considerably older mother has just received her home insurance renewal from those nice people with the red phone you see advertising on the TV all the time.

Not unusual, it happens every year, only this year they want £777 for both building and contents – a bit high.

So I phone up on her behalf and tell them it’s too much they immediately reduce it to £582. Five minutes work, £195 saving(?), good start.

On a roll I then go to the website of the said red phone insurers rather than ringing on their direct line. I put in all her details, same cover, same everthing £256, a mere £521 saving(?).

So, does this make me a keen shopper or does this make them thieving b@stards taking advantage of trusting old folk with no access to the internet?

It's fairly common for them to hike the renewals in the hope you wont notice or can't be arsed to research better prices. It'd take the business else where, and explain to them why, so they stop doing it.

We don't pay much more than that for buildings insurance on a block of 5 flats.

I also found by calling the red phone they knocked 20% of my contents insurance.

If everyone was a keen shopper, the price would go up for the keen shoppers. No?

Got mine down from £440 to £155 this year, buildings and contents.

Last years premium was £220, 100% increase on the nose!!!

I think it's standard practice now to take the piss with renewals, hoping people are lazy and just let it renew on a yearly basis as they always seem to keep your card details these days.

Insurance Brokers = Thieving bds

I dont mind them making a profit thats not an issue, but when they send out a renewal knowing full well that they can supply a cheaper quote just to try and catch you out, it seems more like a scam to me.

Its a shame you cant go straight to an underwriter without using a broker..

Yep I take about 30% off my car insurance premium by doing a quick on line check - with the same company, they really are just preying on those that don't check
