SWMBO has just been to withdraw some money from her savings account. She asked to withdraw £150 but the lass behind the counter counted out £250. SWMBO didn't question this, thinking that she must have absentmindedly asked for £250, extra £100 in hand would be usefull etc.

Only when she had left the bank did she check the paperwork, and the withdrawl was down as £150. Question is, what will happen next? will the bank realise their mistake at the end of the day and take the £100 directly out of her account?

Whatever happens, I've told her not to spend the £100 as IMO, its likely that the bank will want it back ASAP.

Thoughts on likely course of action?

Do not steal the money, take it back to the bank.

The cashier's till will have been down by £100, and they will be on a warning.

Its unlikely, unless they review the CCTV, that they'll catch a cash transaction, as the records say £150.

If you like the cashier, take it back. If you don't, don't, but you're hardly sticking it to the bank, more the cashier themselves.

Unlikley that they'll be able to trace it to your wife at the end of the day without going through the CCTV.
I know what I'd do, but if you do decide to keep it I'd guess they won't be chasing you for it unless they go through the CCTV and spot the cashier counting out £250 instead of £150.

As Marcus says, however when the till is balanced at the end of the day the cashier will tend to look through their debits they have processed and ask themselves if they remember them. From experience if they recall something like paying out £250 to your SWMBO she might get a phonecall.

Hope this helps

As someone mentioned- it is very unlikely there will be any comeback for your wife.
If she doesn't hand it back it is very likely there will be some comeback or the cashier.
Its a bit 'off' to keep it really, not to mention theft.

If you keep it it's theft, simple as that.

Cheers guys, much along the same lines as I was thinking. As much as I love the idea of an instant £100 bonus, it doesn't sit right with me.

Double and triple check your statement to ensure that the debit of £150.00 is what has been recoreded and then take it back ASAP. (Or at least phone them to let them know ASAP, then take it back at your convinience.)
