Prepaid credit cards

Me and the other half are off travelling for a year in may and have been looking at getting one of the many prepaid credit cards available as we feel the security aspect of having a card not linked to our bank account is an advantage just wondered if anyone has any experience with using them abroad and which ones are best?

My sister has one of these but apparently you can't do pre-authorisations at hotels with them.

If you get the Sun one or any which has been registered you can. You do need cash in your account to pre auth.

Hmmm. I'll let her know. She's got cash (a few thousand) on the card but it's been refused quite a few times for pre auth.

Why would you pay someone to spend your own money?

Why is a normal CC linked to your bank account? Fraud is fraud - I'd be much happier using the protection of a CC.

I would think a prepaid card would be pretty expensive and tricky to manage if you are using it abroad. For foreign use, the Santander Zero has no fees and doesn't charge anything extra on a currency conversion. The only costs are the interest on cash advances from the time it's taken out until when the c/c bill is paid.
