You'll like this.

2002. A certain mobile company bill the OH twice for the same month. This puts her over her agreed overdraft limit (direct debits). Bank charges her.

She complains to mobile company who eventually refund the bill, and pay her bank charges. st happens, but problem solved. OH changes mobile company a few months later (voting with feet) and pays all bills etc.

2009. Debt collection company wants money for the outstanding debt relating to the 2002 fiasco (what debt!). Various communication happens and OH tells debt company to do one and provides information in a recorded delivery letter. Plus she points out that they breached all number of FSA regulations in the course of dealing with her.

2010. New Debt company phones for her. A company the internet tells me works for mobile phone companies....

Useless bunch of people! I mean (unless it's a new debt...), they are being sold debts that don't exist! Do they not check at all. Company A says "Yeah these people owe 100,000 we'll sell it to you for 50,000" and company B agrees without checking it?

How does this system work?

THis has happened to me several times now from several different collectors all chasing a non existent debt.
Its embarrassing- they send it back to the phone company each time as "uncollectable" for it to be promptly farmed out to another agency.

Does this company to which you refer have a number for its name by any chance?

No. Although it seems to be related to Oxygen. I suspect the same debt company has approached another mobile company offering it's services some point after hassling you.

You know nothing will come of it so try not to see it as hassle - try to have some fun with it. Do them for harassment. Someone who knows more legal stuff will no doubt be able to offer more, but I'm pretty sure there is a code of conduct for these things.

Apparently big companies with their automatic billing and debt systems breach it all the time. I guess if you threaten court action (or just follow through on it) they'll go away, otherwise you'd better get used to it wink Demand your expenses too (for extra irony, charge them at their own mobile rates for calling 0870 numbers).

for a 7 year old debt its about 2-4p in the pound at the moment. So its worth a go.

Which collection company? - I've managed to find out the personal mobile phone number for the finance director of one of the larger ones so you might like to call this whenever they call you.

Maybe you can set up an answerphone message to say "I'm not in - call me on my mobile" and give them this this number when they call you.

Its six years, but that ratio is correct. It is certainly nothing like 50%!

Lets just say that their number for red hot sex chat is 01133 086000.

Basically if they phone again and she's not in, my line is "Send it in writing". Then if they do it'll be returned with another "Go play with yourself" letter and supporting documentation.

I'm just surprised that there is this much money in collecting debts that never existed...well ok if you manage to there's obviously money in it, but we're hardly likely to suddenly decide to pay up.
