Delayed receipts with card payments

I wonder if the banks are upto their old tricks?
I am referring to the delay between taking a card payment,eith debit or credit card,and the money being available to the business. In this instance we were paid on Friday and the money was not cleared until the following Wednesday.
Given that a payment by a customer has to authorized when the card is used, to verify that funds are available, how do they justify the delay?
The banks push card sales as a speedy transfer of funds, but the reality is somewhat different.
Our card terminal is operated by HSBC, though they have recently sold this business.
