Went online this morning and had seen that my available credit level had been reduced by about $1700.

So rang the cc company and they stated that an amount of $1700 has been deducted by a well known laptop company, however its on hold pending release (i think someones ordered a laptop and the funds are due to be released when the order is built).

So they've put through a dispute and if its obviously a con then its refunded within 5 days. If not obvious then they'll go to the retailer and ask for the transaction info which can take up to 45 days.

Card now stopped and i'm not too worried as its clear cut in my mind, but a bit stressed as i just hope all the evidence points to an obvious scam and i get a quick resolution.

Its also annoying as it was for a company in the UK and i've just been there on holiday so my card info has obviously been copied whilst i was there. Back in Oz now so hoping geographic proof is obvious.

Anyway, has anyone else gone through this and is it usually sorted out easily?

Also has anyone gone through it where it was a scam yet they couldnt prove it and got lumbered with a big bill?

Had nearly £20 000 taken on one of my cards. Got it all straight back from the bank as they could see when they looked through that it was definitely not me spending the money. I now have a system in place where if the bank notices any large movements, or ones that don't appear to fit in with my spending habits then I get a quick phone call on my mobile checking up. You should ask your bank manager about this as it is a god send; it can be fairly embarrassing when you get a call though. Them: "Good afternoon Mr ------, there seems to be a large amount of money being spent on your card this afternoon, we would just like to check that you are aware of this?" Me: "Unfortunately I am very aware, it is me!" Them: "Very good Sir"

Happened to me loads of times a while back on my debit card, the details had obviously been sold because everytime a replacement card was sent out it happened to that one too, they'd somehow got hold of the account number rather than the card number. It was getting to the stage where every few weeks another sum of money would be taken, the most taken in one transaction was £1500 but I got all of it back. In the end I had to go into my local branch of Barclays and see my business manager who froze the account and open up another one for me.

I had mine cloned last year, I'm with barclaycard and they stopped the card and refunded me in full. Top marks to them. The losers that did the cloning spent the money in pizza hut and at the cinema! That's what alerted me to it smile

Yep. I've had it 4 times. Different cards, different circumstances.

Not happened for a few years though. Think they're better at detecting/stopping it.

Had my card cloned about 3 years ago. Went to buy a sandwich and the got told to hang on while they wait to process my card.. a few seconds later a policeman appeared and asked for full ID.. I didn't have any but after a showing him my phone (contract) he did some checks and told me that the card had been copied at some time and used on a spending spree. The bank said that they had been aware of the fraud for a couple of days (bds) but had allowed the transactions because police were expected to make an arrest at the same shop the car was being used at! I was in Basingstoke and the frauds occurred in Devon rolleyes Two weeks later and I got all my monies reimbursed but it was two weeks with little money to enjoy life as this was my everyday account and not my bill payment account.

What really got my goat was the fact that the bank knew, and made no effort to give me some other cash arrangements while the frauds were going on.. I'm not with that bank anymore and I now have card protection smile

Yup, first time following a business trip to St Petersburg/Moscow - £7k or so spent on porn and cigarettes - got it all back immediately no problem. Second time in Detroit - bank alerted me just as the chap was trying to spend on my card for booze - his purchase was declined and card canned.

Last time was in London - they somehow lifted a card from my wallet (returing the wallet to my jacket on a desk in the office) and spent £22K in an hour - £12K at the Apple store on Regent Street, a £100 (with tips!!!!) car ride over to Jeroboams in Belgravia, to then spend another £10K on wine and Champers. Clearly thieves with class, they were eventually caught following CCTV analysis from the Apple Store and the black cab. All monies immediately refunded on the day of loss by the card Co..

Most banks (without the need to ask) analyse your spending habits continuously and if a payment request is made which falls significantly outside your normal pattern (type of purchase, amount, geographic locations, etc) they will typically question it and the cashier will be asked to contact them before a payment can be accepted. This is why many crims will start scamming with small purchasees of a few quid - which most of us will not realise/discover - then up the value gradually over a day or two to create a spending pattern, and then hit the card with one big payment. The card Co's are all switched onto this, but as ever the crims are typically one step ahead...

I think they are better at stopping it these days, I've had a call before now when there were 3-4 transactions for £1.41 or so in a day (this is by all accounts the way they check something or other is working on the card thus it flagged up on the bank's system) and so I got a call and they then stopped it.

Yes I've had it done - an unbelievable £12k spent in a department store in Paris before the bank got suspicious. Settled very quickly, new card, funds returned.

I never found out who the culprits were, however I had had lunch in Paris 2 days previously at a very smart restaurant and that's the only place it could have been cloned.

Had my credit card cloned a couple of times - not too much on either occasion. Nationwide called me and dealt with it pretty well iirc. Suspect a Shell garage in Croydon that I don't go to any more.

I had my card cloned at the Shell garage in Ashtead. It was used to pay for £50-odd of web hosting, however First Direct picked this up right away.

A few years ago now a friend's credit card was cloned and used to sign up for an internet dating service. A scary thought if someone is prepared to go to those lengths to conceal their identity.

Had my current account frauded for a couple of thousand for flights to/from Spain or somewhere. Barclays very on the ball, rang me and of course I confirmed it wasn't me. Was another couple of weeks until the transaction was due to go through but during which Barclays 'held' the amount so I couldn't spend it but then went into a branch and the guy very happily said 'we've managed to prevent a fraud from occurring' or something along those lines in a very Minority Report style!

What struck me as stupid was why try book flights? Surely they'd get caught at the airport when checking in etc?

my thoughts exactly, but that's what they did to us when we were done, 3 1st class tickets to Stockholm, but surely their id would not match the names on the ticket etc, plus plod could be waiting.

still my lot are on the ball, albeit back to front, payed off a loan in the morning (c17K - sold a house) and then got asked to wait whilst they phoned the bank as I bought a £15 scarf for the OH smile

however they don't always listen, my daughter has just been to oz for xmas, she told her bank the dates she would be there and even were in the country, they still refused her card till she phoned them, berks.

Yes, had mine done twice this year, both had a £2 transaction go through then a £999 almost straight away. Tesco were brilliant, refunded and new cards issued same day, cannot fault them at all.

A mate had a similar experience with a laptop from currys, first he knew of it was when the receipt was delivered to his house, showing that a laptop had been delivered to another address he didn't know, with his name as the addressee! He went down to his local station, and could not have cared less! Gave him a crime number for the fraud dept!!!!

This is why I always use a credit card and never a debit card. I'd rather pay the 2% charge (if a business wants to make that charge) than hand over my bank account details (direct access to my easy earned money). At least with credit cards, there's an extra layer of protection before you're in trouble financially. Just pay off the CC bills at the end of the month to avoid dragging the country into further debt ridden hell. wink
